This project investigates the role of the striatum in skill learning, focusing on neural changes during skill acquisition and consolidation. It aims to differentiate the pathways involved in voluntary and automatic movements, with implications for movement disorders.
The learning of novel skills is characterized by an initial stage of rapid improvement in performance, followed by a phase of more gradual improvements as the skills are automatized and performance asymptotes.
