The NEMO project aims to develop an effective treatment for neonatal seizures caused by hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy. It focuses on using bumetanide to modify GABA's action in the brain, with a goal of improving outcomes for affected infants through a large-scale clinical trial and tailored formulations.
Neonatal hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) occurs in 2-3/1000 live births and is a major cause of both acute mortality and long-term neurodisability.
