This project investigates the role of non-coding RNAs in gene regulation, particularly their involvement in epigenetic processes. Using mouse stem cells, it aims to uncover how these RNAs interact with chromatin modifications and influence gene silencing mechanisms.
For a long time it has been accepted that a big part of the genome consisted of the so-called ''junk'' DNA without functional importance.
Through the ENCODE project it has been evident that the vast majority of this DNA is in fact transcribed into RNA, producing a huge number of small and long non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) of unknown function.
Previous studies suggested that ncRNAs may be implicated among others in epigenetic regulation.
