This project focuses on developing a new treatment for Niemann-Pick Disease Type C, a genetic disorder affecting cholesterol metabolism in the brain. By embedding cyclodextrins into smart polymer nanoparticles, it aims to improve drug delivery and efficacy for this rare disease.
Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC), also known as “childhood Alzheimer’s”, is a rare genetic disorder caused by the accumulation of cholesterol particularly in the brain with subsequent cognitive and mobility decline.
In the EU NPC has an incidence of 1 per 100,000 people.
Most cases are detected during childhood and progress to cause life-threatening complications by the second or third decade of life.
