This project explores how the tuberculosis bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis acquires iron through specialized molecules called siderophores. It aims to understand the transport mechanisms of these molecules and develop new strategies to combat tuberculosis by targeting iron acquisition.
To infect humans, the devastating pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis critically depends on two closely related siderophores – soluble carboxymycobactin and membrane-bound mycobactin – which capture iron with high affinity inside the host cell.
