This project develops a new methodology for machine translation that relies solely on bilingual dictionaries and monolingual text corpora, addressing the challenge of limited training data. It involves creating a database of translation equivalents and using a combinatorial approach to translate sentences.
As evidenced by a number of machine translation competitions, statistical machine translation is producing encouraging results for language pairs where large corpora of previously translated texts are available for training.
However, in practice the availability of such data is often a severe bottleneck.
