The project aims to create a detailed molecular map of the surface of nerve cells, focusing on ion channels crucial for signal processing. By combining advanced imaging techniques and electrophysiology, it seeks to reveal how these channels contribute to the cell's functional diversity.
The most fundamental roles of nerve cells are the detection of chemical neurotransmitters to generate synaptic potentials; the summation of these potentials to create their output signals; and the consequent release of their own neurotransmitter molecules.
All of these functions require the orchestrated work of hundreds of molecules targeted to specialized regions of the cells.
