MER-CURE aims to enhance understanding of mercury transformations in marine environments to address pollution. The project will develop a global gene catalogue related to mercury cycling and test methods for its removal from contaminated sediments.
Millions of people are exposed to harmful levels of the potent neurotoxin mercury (Hg), concretely to the organic form methylmercury (MeHg) that bio-accumulates in organisms and biomagnifies in marine food webs.
