The MARSITE project focuses on improving seismic risk assessment and management in the Marmara Sea region, which is prone to earthquakes. It aims to coordinate multidisciplinary research efforts to collect and analyze data for better risk mitigation strategies through long-term monitoring on land and at sea.
The recent devastating earthquakes and associated tsunamis in Japan, Indonesia, and Haiti, which killed more than half a million people, highlighted how mankind is still far away from a satisfactory level of seismic risk mitigation.
