This project examines the influence of Machiavellian realism in Japanese culture from 1868 to 1968, focusing on its impact on national identity and conflict. It aims to connect Japanese interpretations of Machiavelli with Western thought, providing a global perspective on realism in politics.
The project studies the fortune in the modern and contemporary Japanese culture (1868-1968) of the notion of Machiavellian realism—the representation of Machiavelli as the father of modern Realpolitik.
The analysis will focus, in particular, on the relationship between realism and conflict, which has been fundamental in the nineteenth and twentieth century historiography on Machiavelli as well as in the Japanese discourse on national identity.
