This project investigates the role of LINE-1, a type of mobile DNA, in human somatic cells and its implications for diseases. It aims to understand how LINE-1 activity affects genetic stability and contributes to conditions like cancer, potentially guiding therapeutic strategies.
45% of the human genome is made of repeated DNA, and some types can be mobilized within the genome (mobile DNA). LINE-1 or L1 is the only autonomous active mobile DNA within the human genome, with 500.000 copies per haploid genome (~17% of the genome).
Overall, L1 is responsible for ~30% of our genome.
