The LIGHTWELD project focuses on advancing welding technologies for lightweight alloys in aircraft structures. By replacing traditional riveting with laser beam welding and resistance spot welding, it aims to reduce weight, lower costs, and enhance automation in manufacturing processes.
Riveting has been the state of the art of joining technology for aircraft structures since decades.
