This project explores the mechanisms of visual awareness and its restoration after brain damage. It combines human and monkey neuroscience to develop a rehabilitation protocol that integrates brain stimulation and visual training to enhance visual awareness in affected individuals.
Visual awareness affords flexibility and experiential richness, and its loss following brain damage has devastating effects.
However, patients with blindness following cortical damage may retain visual functions, despite visual awareness is lacking (blindsight).
