The LANTERN project aims to create an advanced in vitro model of human neural tube development to study neural tube defects. By combining bioengineering and stem cell technologies, it seeks to replicate the conditions that influence neural tube formation and identify underlying causes of defects.
Neural tube (NT) defects, such as spina bifida and encephalocele, affect over 300000 births worldwide each year and originate from alterations in the earliest stages of embryogenesis.
Understanding their causes remains challenging because human NT development is inaccessible to direct investigation.
