The JEUX project explores the influence of literary games on the development of the novel in seventeenth-century France. It systematically analyzes how these games shaped narrative standards and the self-theorization of the novel genre, using innovative methodologies that combine literary theory and game studies.
Literary games were a wide-spread practice in seventeenth-century France, and prominent novelists wrote fictions about a salon company playing the “game of the novel” (jeu du roman).
While literary games were clearly defined, the novel was a genre that had yet to establish its standards.
