This research investigates the mossy fiber synapse in the hippocampus to determine its role in neuronal firing and information processing. By using advanced imaging techniques, the study aims to clarify how these synapses contribute to learning and memory.
A commonly repeated maxim is that an individual cortical neuron receives synaptic input from tens of thousands of presynaptic partners, with each individual connection carrying only minor weight.
