This project investigates the dynamics of chloride and hydrogen ions in developing neurons and astrocytes in the mouse brain. By using optical reporters and light-activated proteins, it aims to understand how ion gradients influence neurogenesis and synaptic development.
Ionic gradients are a fundamental feature of the nervous system and its development.
They are established by the actions of ion pumps, transporters and channel proteins that reside in the membrane of cells.
And maintaining these gradients is a prerequisite for generating fluxes of ions, which in turn drive cellular processes.
