interACT seeks to enhance communication between automated vehicles and other road users to ensure safe interactions in mixed traffic. By developing new software and hardware components, the project aims to improve user experience and traffic flow while reducing accidents.
There is currently a high desire by manufacturers to introduce Automated Vehicles (AVs), SAE level 3 and above, to the market.
As AVs are likely to be deployed in mixed traffic, they need to interact safely and efficiently with other (non-equipped) users, including manually driven vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Although obstacle detection by AVs is almost flawless, these vehicles cannot communicate their intentions to other road users.
