ICE&LASERS aims to advance paleoclimate science by developing a probe to extract ancient ice core data, extending records to 1.5 million years and measuring greenhouse gas concentrations. This will enhance understanding of past climate shifts and carbon cycle dynamics.
ICE&LASERS propose to make a breakthrough in two challenges of paleoclimate science:(1) Extending the Antarctic ice core records to 1.5 million years ago is critical to understand the unexplained climate shift from 40,000-year periodicities to 100,000-year ones, calling for a different climate sensitivity to orbital forcing.
