This project investigates new treatment strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma by targeting the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway. It aims to develop selective mTORC1 inhibitors to enhance the efficacy of existing therapies.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the predominant form of liver cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.
The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib is the only approved drug to treat HCC and on average enhances survival by three months.
Thus, the efficacy of current HCC treatment options is very limited.
