This project explores the role of informality in economic development through a historical analysis of informal networks in China. By examining case files from the 1970s and 1980s, it aims to uncover how informal entrepreneurship can drive change and support marginalized populations.
Although informality has long been considered a barrier to economic development, as more emerging market economies achieve growth even while remaining stubbornly informal, this assumption has become a subject of debate.
