This research focuses on analyzing the thermal behavior of lithium-ion batteries during charge and discharge cycles, especially under abnormal conditions. By using advanced modeling techniques, it aims to understand the mechanical degradation processes that can lead to safety hazards like thermal runaway.
Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are found in many applications such as consumer electronics, electric vehicles and airplanes.
However, despite of the high safety standards being imposed, there have been many reported accidents as well as recalls by some manufacturers.
Most accidents can be sourced to runaway reactions, which could happen if the LIBs are overheated or overcharged.
