This project analyzes cave calcite deposits to create high-resolution records of North Atlantic hurricane activity over the past 500 years. It aims to improve understanding of hurricane patterns in relation to climate change and natural cycles by comparing pre- and post-industrial greenhouse gas conditions.
The proposed research would utilise various geochemical proxies (oxygen, carbon, and trace elements) in cave calcite deposits (stalagmites) to develop extraordinarily high-resolution North Atlantic hurricane activity records for the past five hundred years, extending existing historical datasets by hundreds of years.
