This research project investigates the predictability of earthquakes using a multidisciplinary approach. It combines laboratory experiments and machine learning to understand earthquake phenomena, focusing on both simple and complex fault systems to improve hazard mitigation strategies.
Earthquakes are spectacular natural disasters, as exemplified by the 2004 Sumatra and 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquakes.
Predicting earthquakes remains one of the biggest societal challenges in natural science.
