The characteristic energy of many fundamental processes in molecules and condensed matter lies in the terahertz (THz) frequency range; examples include biologically important collective vibrations of proteins, crystal lattice resonance oscillations, electron transitions in semiconductor nanostructures, and Cooper pairs formation in superconductors.
