This project investigates the structure and function of metal sites in enzymes that utilize metals for catalysis. It aims to understand how these structures influence reactivity, with the goal of designing new catalysts for sustainable chemical processes.
It is estimated that almost half of all enzymes utilize metal cofactors for their function, for example the respiratory complexes and the oxygen-evolving photosystem II, the most fundamental requirements for aerobic life as we know it.
If we could mimic nature’s use of metals for harvesting sunlight, energy conversion and chemical synthesis it would eliminate the need for fossil fuels and greatly increase the possibilities of chemical industry while reducing the environmental impact.
