This research investigates the immune response to hepatitis B and C viruses to identify new drug targets. It employs advanced models to explore how interferons affect viral persistence and aims to enhance treatment options for chronic liver infections.
Chronic hepatotropic infections including hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) are a major public healthconcern.
Even though both viruses belong to completely distinct families the pathogenesis they elicit isstrikingly similar, leading to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
Treatment for HBV and HCV consists of eitherdirect-acting antivirals or pegylated interferon (IFN)α.
In contrast to HCV, these treatment regimen are noncurativefor HBV.
