The Go4Stevia project aims to support tobacco farmers in Europe by introducing Stevia rebaudiana as a viable alternative crop. By developing innovative farming practices and promoting Stevia products, the project seeks to enhance the economic viability of small tobacco farms facing subsidy reductions.
The CAP reform for the tobacco sector (EG Nr. 864/2004) has the aim to phase out the subsidy payment for tobacco cultivation on Dec 31, 2013.
This will have a great impact on the tobacco growers in terms of income and employment.
Without a diversification alternative with a high added value most of European Tobacco farms must close.
