The GIFT project investigates how plants manage iron uptake and protect against harmful metal excess. By studying the role of specific proteins in this process, the research aims to improve crop yields and nutritional quality in iron-deficient soils.
Iron (Fe) is one of the most common metals in the Earth's crust, but plants are often unable to absorb it as it forms insoluble complexes, especially in alkaline soils.
