This project investigates how climate change affects the stability and reliability of geotechnical infrastructure, such as highways and flood defenses. It aims to develop numerical models to assess the impact of extreme weather on these structures and provide guidance for future design and maintenance.
Geotechnical infrastructure is pervasive around the world as a method of forming topographical change for highway embankments/cuttings, flooding defences, retaining walls.
In general, it provides a cost effective way of producing topographical features.
However, the maintenance costs of such pervasive infrastructure is high, for example over €800m per year is required to be invested in the Netherlands.
