This project aims to identify new genetic risk factors for breast cancer by focusing on genetic variations that regulate gene expression. It seeks to enhance risk assessment and patient stratification, ultimately improving pre-disease management and public health outcomes.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, with more than 330,000 new cases diagnosed in the European Union in 2008.
It is crucial to understand the genetic causes behind this fatal disease to better stratify women at higher risk and to reduce breast cancer incidence.
Inherited susceptibility to breast cancer is largely due to polygenic variation, and only about 30-35% of familial cases are explained by known risk loci.
