This project explores how changes in neuron excitability and structure contribute to memory encoding and disease mechanisms. Using cerebellar climbing fibers as a model, it investigates the interplay between neuronal function and structural modifications.
Modifications of the structure and intrinsic excitability of neurons (i.e. “structural plasticity” and “intrinsic plasticity”) have been proposed to contribute significantly in encoding memory in synergy with synaptic plasticity and have been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of several diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS).
