The FreeMi project aims to combat the decline of amphibians caused by a fungal disease by exploring the role of zooplankton in controlling the pathogen. The project seeks to develop a habitat-level mitigation strategy that enhances natural defenses against the disease.
Amphibians are currently suffering severe worldwide declines caused by chytridiomycosis, an emerging infectious disease caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd).
So far, disease mitigation strategies have taken a host-level approach, in which only the host-pathogen interactions have been considered.
