This project focuses on developing a new catalytic method to convert inert carbon-fluorine bonds in perfluoroarenes into reactive carbon-aluminium bonds. The goal is to create valuable building blocks for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, enhancing the use of fluorinated compounds in chemical manufacturing.
Fluorinated organic molecules play a pivotal role in chemical manufacture.
For example, it has been estimated that approximately 20-40% of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals contain at least one fluorine atom.
Despite the fact that perfluoroarenes - aromatic hydrocarbons in which every hydrogen atom is replaced with a fluorine atom - are an inexpensive abundant chemical feedstock they are rarely used in chemical manufacture.
