FIRESTORM aims to develop a comprehensive system that models fire ignition, spread, and atmospheric dispersion from various sources. This system assesses both primary and secondary hazards related to wildfires, enabling proactive fire prevention measures and improving emergency management strategies.
Wildfires are increasing around the globe in frequency, severity and duration, increasing the need to understand their primary effects on ecosystems and human health.
Furthermore, wildfires trigger or enhance a range of secondary hazards (e.g. floods, ash and phosphorus dispersion); also, wildfire's byproducts can be transported over long distances, with harmful effects on soil chemistry, air and water quality.
