The EXAUTOIMMUNE project investigates Sjögren’s syndrome, a common autoimmune disease, by analyzing extracellular vesicles from salivary glands. Using advanced nanotechnology and sequencing, it aims to identify RNA molecules that could disrupt autoimmune processes, potentially leading to new therapeutic strategies.
It is estimated that over 36 million Europeans suffer from an autoimmune disease (AID) and according to the EuropeanLeague against Rheumatism one third of people of all ages are affected at some point during their lifetime. AIDs are asignificant clinical problem, however, most of the current therapies target the terminal phase of inflammation and do notsuppress the fundamental events responsible for the initiation of the autoimmune process.
