This project investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms of circalunar clocks in the marine midge Clunio marinus. By utilizing genetic adaptations, the research aims to identify candidate genes and their roles in timing development and reproduction according to lunar phases.
Circalunar clocks are endogenous biological clocks, which allow organisms to time development and reproduction to lunar phase.
They are common in marine organisms, but their molecular basis is still entirely unknown.
Candidate gene approaches have failed so far.
