The EVOBOMICS project investigates non-functional mitochondrial gene copies and genetic variation in bumblebees to understand their evolutionary implications. It aims to explore the prevalence of these genetic phenomena and their roles in speciation and phylogenetic analysis.
Cutting edge sequencing technology enables, for the first time, the characterization of high quality numts (non-functional copies of genes of mitochondrial origin present in the nuclear genome) and heteroplasmy (the presence of different mitochondrial genotypes in the same organism).
