This project seeks to create a human Airway-on-Chip model to study the interactions between the airway epithelium and microbiome in patients with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The goal is to understand how changes in microbiome composition affect susceptibility to respiratory infections.
Patients with chronic inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) have a higher prevalence of respiratory infections.
These infections accelerate disease progression and are associated with substantial morbidity and (especially in COPD) even mortality.
Recent studies show that the airway microbiome of patients with asthma and COPD is different from that of healthy subjects.
