This project investigates a newly discovered type of bacteria capable of conducting electricity over long distances. It aims to understand how these bacteria reduce nitrate and their implications for nitrogen cycling in marine ecosystems, using advanced biogeochemical techniques.
Recently, a novel type of long, filamentous bacteria has been discovered, which are capable of guiding electrical currents over centimeter distances.
These so-called “cable bacteria” were first isolated from marine sediments, and laboratory experiments demonstrate that electrons are passed on from cell to cell along the longitudinal axis of the filaments.
