This project analyzes the impact of the fragmentation of the Roman Empire on Episcopal networks in Western Europe. It utilizes network theory to explore how these networks influenced cultural and institutional integration during the late antiquity period.
The fragmentation of the Roman World meant a reduction in scale, that is, a contraction in the system formed by economic, political, social and cultural relationship networks.
Conversely, the Church survived into the middle ages as the only ‘supranational’ institution despite having faced some disruptive challenges.
