This project explores the development of the Manx Gaelic language through the study of religious texts and manuscripts from the eighteenth century. It examines the processes of linguistic standardization and translation in the context of cultural shifts towards English.
Emergent linguistic norms and translated religious prose in eighteenth-century ManxManx Gaelic, the native Celtic language of the Isle of Man, was a largely unwritten oral language until the development of an English-based orthography for religious use from the seventeenth century, This process culminated in authorized translations of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer (1765) and a complete Bible translation (1772).
