This project examines the interplay between economic nationalism and European integration, particularly in the context of the automobile industry. It aims to analyze how the European Union influences economic nationalism in member states and the potential for supranational trends.
Heated debates about ‘Buy American’ clauses and ‘British jobs for British workers’ have demonstrated the continued salience of economic nationalism as a public policy issue today.
Among scholars, too, there has been a growing interest in the theme in recent years, which has gone hand in hand with a shifting understanding of economic nationalism away from a mere focus on state policies, and towards broader notions of collective identity.
