This project develops innovative polymer materials for medical devices that prevent blood clotting and bacterial infections. By creating multifunctional coatings that generate nitric oxide and inhibit thrombin, the aim is to enhance the safety and longevity of blood-contacting devices.
Surface-induced thrombosis and infection are two main complications which cause failure of medical devices.
Device-related thrombosis is associated with activation of blood clotting and platelets adhesion and activation.
