This project investigates artificial metalloenzymes, which are hybrid catalysts combining metal cofactors with proteins. The aim is to enhance their catalytic efficiency in biological systems by evolving them within Escherichia coli, potentially improving metabolic pathways and creating new biocatalytic applications.
In the past decade, artificial metalloenzymes (AMs) have emerged as an attractive alternative to the more traditional enzymes and homogeneous catalysts.
Such hybrid catalysts result from the incorporation of an abiotic metal cofactor within a macromolecule (protein or oligonucleotide).
