Moiré patterns are commonly observed phenomena across all length scales. A moiré pattern arises from the spatial modulation of stacked sublattices, which have slightly different lattice constants and/or orientations.
This pattern forms a superlattice with a larger periodicity, spanning multiple unit cells of the sublattices.
To date, moiré superlattices comprising sublattices with lattice constants of several nanometers have not been experimentally realized.
