DisFriend explores the historical context of friendships between individuals with and without cognitive disabilities. It aims to understand the reasons behind the loneliness experienced by people with cognitive disabilities through archival research and oral histories.
According to a 2023 survey, 24% of the global population felt “very lonely”.
This percentage is even higher in the case of marginalized groups: research suggests that up to half of persons with cognitive disabilities experience loneliness, despite their emancipation after the 1960s.
Attempts to reduce their loneliness have only limited success, because we do not fully understand why people with cognitive disabilities experience more loneliness than the general population.
