The DISCO project investigates the elemental compositions of planets forming around young stars. By analyzing gas-ice-refractory balances, it aims to model the diversity of elements in planetary systems, enhancing our understanding of habitability and the potential for life beyond Earth.
Our sun is host to eight planets, and recent discoveries have revealed that there is at least one planet per star in the Galaxy.
Moreover, small, rocky planets like the Earth outnumber the Jupiter-like gas giants.
The bulk elemental composition of most planets is not yet known, but evidence from the solar system and some extrasolar (proto-)planetary systems suggests there are considerable variations in the abundance of elements such as carbon, chlorine, iron and others.
