This project investigates the cultural significance of dirt in urban Africa, exploring its implications for sexuality, waste management, and urbanization. It aims to provide a comparative historical perspective on local understandings of dirt in cities like Nairobi and Lagos.
Dirt permeates everyday life in urban Africa, but it is more than an empirical substance: dirt is also an idea—or a complex set of representations—that shapes local perceptions of sexuality and the body, and influences people’s attitudes towards waste, recycling, urbanisation, ethnicity and migration.
