The DIALECT project aims to improve Natural Language Understanding by integrating dialectal variations and addressing biases in language models. It focuses on developing algorithms that can learn from limited data and human uncertainty, ultimately enhancing technology for diverse language speakers.
Dialects are ubiquitous and for many speakers are part of everyday life.
They carry important social and communicative functions.
Yet, dialects and non-standard languages in general are a blind spot in research on Natural Language Understanding (NLU).
